Family Life
1. List the members of your family (include name, age, occupation
and grade/level of education):
Father: Lokman Demirovic, 67, retired neurosurgeon, finished
medical school
Mother: Nafja Demirovic, 65, homemaker, finished high school
Daughter: Arina Bucalovic, 26, refugee and (pre-war) shop
owner, finished accountancy school degree
Arina's Husband: Nedzad Bucalovic, 23, soldier and (pre-war)
hairdresser
Arina and Nedzad's Daughter: Nadja Bucalovic, 2
3. How much time does your family spend together at
work and play?
Because of the war, Nedzad is often out on the front line, and
we don't spend much time together. We have no activities
together outside of the apartment.
4. How far do you commute to work or school?
Nedzad fights the Serbs in Radivoce, a position in the
mountains, 10 kilometers northeast of Sarajevo.
5. What kinds of transportation do you use? How much time is
spent in transport?
Since December 1992, Nedzad has walked. He fights the
Serbs in Radivoce, a position in the mountains, 10 kilometers
northeast of Sarajevo. Every 8 days he walks back home and
rests for 6 days.
Lokman's car stands in the building's garage. It was a Yugo, a
copy of the Soviet Lada; now it's a piece of metal full of
shrapnel holes, hidden under an old plastic cafe terrace
umbrella. He bought it 14 years ago and never had any
problems with it, until some shells fell too close to it. He used to
drive the Demirovics onto the Dalmatian coast during holidays.
6. Do you actively practice your religion? How does it affect
your daily life and community?
We are Muslims, but we don't practice.
